SAG conducted a comprehensive market, financial and operations analysis for Shawnee County, the owner of the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, KS, to create a long-term strategic plan for the venue. The multi-purpose venue located on the old fairgrounds site adjacent to downtown encompasses the 10,000 seat Landon Arena, a 44,500 square foot exhibition hall, the R. R. Domer Livestock Arena and related facilities, and several other outbuildings. The site also includes an unbranded headquarters hotel and conference space. The SMG-managed complex is highly utilized but has had little capital improvements since its original 1986 construction. Furthermore, new facilities in Kansas City and Wichita have impacted the competitive position of Kansas state capital. SAG’s work examined all market, financial, operational and physical issues to advise the center’s Advisory Board and Shawnee County Commission on extending the life of one of Topeka’s most important assets.
